Plastic ocean garbage provides habitat opportunities

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains large amounts of floating plastic. Normally considered an ecological problem, it is serving as a habitat for marine sea skaters or water striders.Researchers believe this to be the first known increase in invertebrate populations on the open ocean. Other species such as crabs are benefiting from this event. What opportunities for discussion could this offer in class?
